Tuesday, October 2nd

Main Topic of today was:

  • Discussing and learning what the six strategies are in this class for choosing a company to add to their stock portfolios. This was a continuation of what they began yesterday. We identified six strategies for beginners in the market:
    • Go with what you know! What do you like? Stock tips are all around you - ask friends and family members.
    • Consider current and future markets. What's new? Is it popular? Is there global potential? (discussion of BuggyBed on Shark Tank show)
    • Understanding Economic Cycles. What's happening in the economy? People still spend money during economic "down" times. But, what are they spending it on?
    • Go with "Boring" stocks - be open minded. What are "boring" stocks? How do I find them?
    • What "industries" are doing well at this time?
    • Do your research! Use the resources available. We will be using Yahoo Finance and Motleyfool.com. Know how a company is doing? Know what it produces!
  • Mr. M showed how to navigate in Yahoo Finance to find the Sectors and Industries of the U.S. economy. Using this information students can see what companies belong to what industries/sectors.
